
Pantalica The Rocky Necropolis Pantalica among Siculians and Mycenaeans has the largest prehistoric cemetery of Europe! An extraordinary excursion in a beautiful wild naturalistic background! Departure from Taormina by small bus or jeep to Pantalica Park entrance.
It lies 110 km from Taormina among the Hyblei Mountains near Syracuse.
Then we walk down to the river Calcinara (35 minutes descent) to see the impressive North Necropolis (cemetery) where over 1500 tombs have been cut into the rock. We cross the small Calcinara river and walk up to the main site of Pantalica to see the ruins of the Anaktoron (palace of the Lord). We continue our trekking towards an old byzantine village where the tombs have been of the South Necropolis have been transformed into simple apartments VII-IX century after Christ. Walk down to the Anapo river among magnificent vegetation and picnic time by the river. In the afternoon we cross the beautiful valley floor of the Anapo river and finally ascend to the entrance of the protected area, return to the jeep/bus.
Arrive back in Taormina at 18h00.
Please bring plenty of water and a picnic with you, possibly prepared the evening before.
